Apple to Sell iPhone as Subscription Service

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is working on selling iPhones and iPads as part of a hardware Subscription service. The service could launch next year, according to the author Mark Gurman. The move would be consistent with Apple’s overall push toward services. Apple has been pushing recurring Subscription like Apple Music, Apple TV Plus, Apple News Plus, Apple Fitness Plus, and Apple Arcade as major new income streams for the corporation during the last several years.

Many of such services have previously been grouped together in Apple’s Apple One packages. On the hardware sector, we’ve already seen a similar shift: Apple introduced a monthly Subscription plan for its AppleCare extended warranties in 2019.

Since 2015, Apple has provided its iPhone Upgrade Program, which allows users to pay for AppleCare and an iPhone over the course of 24 months with the option to trade in their handset after 12 months. In many ways, each of those programmes are similar to a hardware Subscription. According to Bloomberg, the monthly charge would not simply be the device’s price divided by 12 or 24 months, but rather a yet-to-be-determined monthly cost, possibly with the ability to upgrade to new technology as it becomes available.

It would be attached to a user’s current Apple ID account, similar to Apple’s other Subscription, with the option of bundling in AppleCare or Apple One services as well. You can pay Apple for its services and an iPhone on a monthly basis right now, but they’re still two different prices and plans to keep track of.
