US Aviation Body Raises Safety Concerns Over Use of 5G Telecommunications Technology

The US Federal Aviation Administration warned of potential interference due use of 5G Telecommunications technology. It issued a special information bulletin warning the manufacturers, operators, and pilots of safety concerns stating that action may be needed to address the potential interference of 5G technology caused to the aircraft electronics.

The FAA is in talks with federal communications commission that is planning to begin 5G technology from December 5.  The FAA said that staring using 5G Telecommunications technology may lead to malfunctioning of certain sensitive and safety equipment of the flight thereby affecting flight operations.FAA said there is an urgent need to address this challenge and take mitigating actions. However, FAA’s bulletin also stated that there are no real time reports that have recorded of being affected by 5G technology. FAA recommended that pilots must remind the passengers that all the portable 5G technology enabled devices must be switched off during flight.

FAA warned that 5G technology may potentially degrade the safety equipment used during flight operations along with other equipment like altimeters. FAA said that manufacturers should test the capability of altimeters and should explore design changes that could remain ineffective with the interference of 5G technology.
